Miguel Vargas talks to reporters this Friday.
SANTO DOMINGO.- Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel Vargas estimated this Friday that the idea of Canada to set up an office in the Dominican Republic to channel aid to Haiti must be agreed with the most preponderant sectors of national life.
In a conversation with journalists, the president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) said that it is the nation most affected by what is happening in the neighboring country, but he understands that if the government is part of the conversation with the Canadian authorities, he should not give his approval without discussing the matter with the “most important” sectors.
“Obviously, the Dominican Republic can in no way be closed to initiatives that lead to a solution to the crisis that Haiti is going through,” Maldonado said after indicating that concern for the sovereignty and security of the nation should be a priority.
Vargas pointed out that the government should have submitted to international organizations a proposal for the formation of a regional bloc to monitor the situation of insecurity in this country and that this promotes the disarmament of the criminal gangs operating there.
He indicated that the said bloc should focus on the pacification of the main Haitian territories and then promote the holding of elections while waiting for the choice of new authorities.
He stressed the importance of acting against the illegal migration of Haitians into the country in order to reduce the high expenses it represents for Dominicans, emphasizing areas such as education and health.
