Canada wins 28th ice hockey world title

Sports Writing, May 28. The Canadian team won its twenty-eighth ice hockey world championship title this Sunday in Tampere (Finland) by beating Germany in the final of the competition organized jointly in Finland and Latvia since May 12.

The Germans took the lead twice on the scoreboard, with goals from JJ Peterka and Daniel Fischbuch, and kept their chances of making history, but in the third and final period the Canadians imposed logic to take the match and the title by 5-2.

Canada scored the only three goals of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and win its second gold medal in three years with goals from Samuel Blais, Tyler Toffoli and Scott Laughton.

Canada has appeared in 13 of the last 21 gold medal games with a record seven wins and has won medals in each of the past four years (two gold and two silver).

Special mention for Adam Fantilli who, at 18, becomes the second Canadian and the eleventh player to win gold at a Junior World Cup and at an absolute in the same season.

For Germany, the silver medal on Sunday is its first in a world championship since 1953, the Federal Republic of Germany having fallen in the final against Sweden.
