Pair of Díaz and Alayo
Havana, June 9 (JIT).- The Cuban duo of Noslen Díaz and Jorge Luis Alayo won the gold medal at the Norceca Pre-World Beach Volleyball Tournament in Los Corales 2023, Dominican Republic, and won qualified for the world event based in Tlaxcala, Mexico next October.
The West Indians beat the duo of Mora and López of Nicaragua without much opposition in the final match, with the scores of 21-12 and 21-10 in just 26 minutes.
That same day, in the semi-finals, they beat the Canadian couple of Schachter and Dearing with a pair of tied scores of 21-15, according to the contest’s official website.
Earlier in the quarter-finals, Díaz and Alayo outscored Bucklin and Cronshaw of the Virgin Islands in three sets (21-15, 16-21, 15-10) and 53 minutes of fierce battle.
In Group A, the Cubans beat the Dominicans Martínez and De Jesús by 21-15 and 21-15, and the Cayman Islands, Jesario and Watson with partial scores of 21-4 and 21-6.
The only defeat for the pupils of Álvarez Cutiño and Walfrido Salas came 19-21 and 24-26 against the American pair Benesh-Partain.
In the women’s category, Cubans Amanda Armenteros and Yenifer Rivera lost in the quarter-finals and therefore the opportunity to win tickets for the 2023 world championship. The Norceca World Cup allocated four places in each gender.
For fifth place, the Caribbean edged Costa Ricans Núñez and Quesada in three sets (19-21, 21-11, 15-8).
CUBA LOST IN THE 2023 NATIONS LEAGUE
The Cuban team suffered the second consecutive defeat Thursday in the Volleyball Nations League 2023, losing to the Netherlands in the first week of the key, which is held in Ottawa, Canada.
Nicolás Vives’ students fell with continuing scores of 26-28, 23-25 and 18-25, after losing last Tuesday to the Canadians with a score of 21-25, 28-26, 21- 25, 25-22, 13-15.
Against the Dutch, opposite Jesús Herrera stood out for Cuba with 12 points; central defender Israel Massó and offensive receiver Miguel Ángel López, both with 10. This Friday they will face Italy at 4:30 p.m.
CUBA AGAINST. PUERTO RICO IN THE U-21 PAN AMERICAN CUP SEMI-FINALS
At the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum, the Cuban team will face Puerto Rico and Canada against the United States in the semi-finals of the Men’s U-21 Pan American Cup Norceca 2023.
The Cubans and Canadians were the first to reach this stage by winning their respective qualifying groups.
The Puerto Ricans won space this afternoon in the quarter-finals, beating Nicaragua 25-19, 25-15 and 25-21. The United States did it beating the Dominican Republic 22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-10.
