The Canadian passport can be renewed online starting in the fall

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said that from the fall, simple Canadian passport renewals can be applied for online and upload the necessary documents and passport photo to a secure government website.

People applying for new passports, including children, will still need to go through the traditional application process with Service Canada.

Social Development Minister Karina Gould said the new digital process is the result of last year when the department was inundated with applications, leading to long queues and even longer waits for that people get their documents.

โ€œFor people who are just doing a simple renewal of a valid passport, it will also be much faster and easier to process, because we already have this data in the system,โ€ he said.

The announcement came as Canada’s new passport design was unveiled, which includes updated security features, new colored pages and removes some references to key moments in Canada’s history.

โ€œThe federal government will continue to work to improve our services and the safety of Canadians. This passport upgrade is one of many efforts that will improve travel and security,โ€ Fraser said during the press conference at Ottawa International Airport.

The design of the travel document has been updated as part of a routine effort to update the Canadian passport every 10 years.
