Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren, together with Under-Secretary for International Economic Relations Claudia Sanhueza, held a meeting with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Mary Ng, who is taking part in a technology-focused trade mission (Clean tech) in Chile.
During the meeting, the authorities discussed the fruitful bilateral relationship, which celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2021, and signed a joint statement in which they underlined the broad coincidence in the productive sphere, focused on ensuring a increased trade with a progressive, sustainable and inclusive approach. that generates more and better jobs and well-being for our societies.
The countries agreed to continue working on new areas of cooperation, such as facilitating digital trade. Similarly, Canada’s interest in joining the Digital Economy Association Agreement (DEPA) was celebrated.
In turn, Chile and Canada underlined their interest in continuing to work together outside the Ottawa Group, to promote the reform and modernization of the WTO.
It should be noted that since the signing of the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement, our two-way merchandise trade has quadrupled to over C$3.0 billion in 2022. In addition, Canada has positioned itself as the main foreign investor in Chile.
