Nueva Pescanova stresses that Cooke is the “ideal partner” to accompany him in his “future growth” – Spain

He believes that the agreement with the Canadian will be “the best possible” for the team and for Galicia

Nueva Pescanova indicated that the Canadian Cooke, with whom Abanca is negotiating exclusively the sale of 80% of the ownership of the fishing company, is the “ideal partner” to accompany him in his “future growth”.

This was reported by the CEO of the Galician company, Ignacio González, in statements to the media at the opening of the Galicia Forum for Global Seafood Sustainability, which is held at the headquarters of the Afundación in Vigo.

Ignacio González stressed that the sale process must be seen “from the natural”, since Abanca itself, owner of Nueva Pescanova, announced when taking control of the company that its majority presence in the shareholding would be temporary and is committed to finding an industrial partner.

“Cooke is a big company and is very much in agreement with us on the way we understand the business”, underlined Ignacio González, who avoided talking about deadlines because, at the moment, the two parties are immersed in a information exchange process. “We are getting to know each other, like married couples,” joked the CEO of Nueva Pescanova.

On the other hand, he expressed his hope that nothing will hinder the operation, although he recognized that “time” will be necessary, since Nueva Pescanova is a company “with a global footprint” and present in many country. In this regard, he added that it is a “fishing, aquaculture, manufacturing and sales” business.

Regarding the possible changes to Nueva Pescanova once the sale is concluded, Ignacio González recalled that Abanca itself has already argued that the center of decision-making will remain in Galicia and that the brand will continue to be Pescanova. “From the beginning, the roadmap (to search for) a company that could accompany us in future growth was established, and it is the ideal partner,” he added.

As he recalled, Cooke “are very strong in North America and Asia”, while Nueva Pescanova has a significant presence in Europe. It is therefore an agreement which, for Galicia and for the workers of the company, “is the best possible”.

AQUACULTURE FARM IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

Asked about the project to set up an aquaculture farm in the Canary Islands for the breeding of octopuses, the CEO of Nueva Pescanova indicated that the said initiative “is continuing its course”.

As he pointed out, in the company they are “firmly convinced that aquaculture is the future of the oceans”, in the sense that it allows to reduce the tension of wild fishing, and more so when this aquaculture is done “sustainably”. .

Ignacio González defended that this activity “must not be bad” and recalled that Nueva Pescanova carries it out with “a lot of scientific backing”. Moreover, he added that the company has “never” maintained “opacity” in this regard and that anyone can see its facilities at the O Grove farm. In the case of the Canary Islands, he said, the regional government has offered “all its support”.
