These funds reaffirm the EU’s continued support for Venezuelans and meet their most urgent needs, defended the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic. The items will be used for food aid, health, shelter, protection, education and legal assistance to Venezuelan refugees both in the country and in host countries.
Canada, as co-host, announced a commitment of C$58.55 million to meet humanitarian needs, as well as to support the long-term integration of refugees and migrants into host communities.
Brussels considers the Venezuelan crisis to be one of the worst financed and, as Lenarcic explained in an interview with Europa Press, the EU’s interest is to maintain contact with Venezuela to avoid a contagion effect and further instability in the South American region.
“We cannot ignore this crisis which, like any other, ultimately requires a political solution that addresses the root causes that drive people to leave their homes,” he said, arguing that the EU does not forget this crisis. .
