STUTTGART (GERMANY), March 13 (dpa/PE) –
American skier Mikaela Shiffrin, the athlete with the most victories in the Alpine Skiing World Cup, has recruited Karin Harjo as a new coach, her federation announced on Monday.
Harjo, a former coach of the U.S. team in various capacities and current head coach of the Canadian women’s team, replaces Mike Day, Shiffrin’s longtime coach who she broke from during the World Cups last month. Harjo and Shiffrin also worked together on Team USA.
The news comes on Shiffrin’s 28th birthday and two days after he claimed his all-time-record 87th World Cup victory.
“For much of my career, I have been able to work with her here and there on the women’s team and then on the sprint team for the past few years. I have witnessed her exceptional work ethic, her ability to work well with other coaches and, more importantly, their connection and dedication to their athletes,” Shiffrin said.
Furthermore, he pointed out that he could “contribute a lot” and offer “a fresh and new way of thinking”. “I am also delighted to continue to showcase the female coaches and staff in my group, with Karin working alongside my mother and my physio Regan -Dewhirst-,” she said.
Shiffrin’s season ends this week with the World Cup final in Soldeu (Andorra). Shiffrin has previously been crowned all-around champion in giant slalom and slalom.
