AMLO promises Trudeau to receive Canadian companies dissatisfied with energy policy

Justin Trudeau stresses that Mexico and Canada are progressive countries working to create better conditions of equality

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador admitted during the bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, that his government had differences with Canadian companies over Mexican energy policy, which is why he promised to have a dialogue with them, to resolve any disagreements.

During the initial message of the bilateral meeting, the Mexican president explained that these types of disputes are due to the intense commercial relationship that exists, but also to the increase in Canadian investments in Mexico.

“We also talked about the companies that operate in the electricity sector, we also seek to solve problems, differences that logically arise when it comes to these commercial economic relations. Also, in boom times, because Canadian investment in Mexico is increasing a lot, like never before,” he insisted.

“Obviously there are topics to discuss, but I made a commitment from Prime Minister Trudeau to receive companies that may have outstanding issues, some disagreement with the attitude of our government, we are always open to dialogue”, he underlined during the meeting at the National Palace.

López Obrador added that during the meeting preceding the bilateral meeting, there was time to discuss economic issues related to Canadian investments in Mexico, the mining sector and projects such as TransCanada, which invests in the construction of a gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico and supply gas to the southeast.

“We also talked about the importance of the immigration program led by Canada, temporary visas for Mexican workers, we talked about the recognition of indigenous communities, peoples of origin, today an agreement will be signed,” he said.

During his speech, Trudeau celebrated that there was a real deepening of economic and commercial ties between the two countries, but also in the relationship with the hemisphere which has challenges for democracy. He said that Mexico and Canada are progressive countries working for justice and equality for all.

“We are progressive countries that seek equality for all, care for the environment, support Indigenous peoples, which puts us at the center of our vision for a more prosperous North America. Over the past few years, we have witnessed a deepening of our economic, trade, but also labor and investment ties,” Trudeau said.

“And as Canada and Mexico remain very strong friends and allies, we will continue to discuss how we can further grow our economic alliances, our people-to-people ties, and most importantly, the prosperity we bring. both to the trilateral relationship in North America, which has so much to offer the world,” he said.
