San Juan, Feb. 14 (EFE).- Bahamian Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell announced on Tuesday that the President of Ukraine, Volodímir Zelenski, will address the leaders of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) during their forty-fourth summit, which begins this Wednesday and in which the crisis in Haiti will also be discussed.
Mitchell explained at a press conference that Zelenski will attend the summit via video conference from the Ukrainian capital.
In February 2022, Caricom issued a statement “strongly” condemning Russia’s military strikes and invasion of Ukraine and calling for the “immediate and complete withdrawal of the military presence and the cessation of all other actions that could ‘aggravate the current dangerous situation in this country’. .
The 15 members of the organization called on all parties concerned “to urgently engage in diplomatic dialogue to immediately defuse hostilities and work for a lasting peace”.
Separately, Mitchell said a solution to the instability in Haiti will also feature prominently on the summit’s three-day agenda, which will be attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“You know that Haiti has been thrown into chaos as a result of the collapse of its political system,” Mitchell said, adding that “countries around the world and in this hemisphere have been trying to figure out what to do to help.” .
“The United States has been trying to find ways to resolve the political situation in Haiti and improve security in that country,” added the Bahamian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Mitchell noted that Canadians have agreed to take the lead in trying to resolve some of these issues and that Trudeau will speak with Bahamian Prime Minister Phillip Davis about it.
“Jamaica and the Bahamas have agreed to provide personnel if the United Nations decides to return to Haiti. The question is how these modalities will be managed. Obviously, we do not have the human resources to carry out such an operation. contribute to it”, underlined the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Secretary of the Caricom Foreign and Community Relations Directorate, Donna Forde, stressed that Canada is a “long-standing bilateral partner” and that the community is pleased that another opportunity for regional leaders to meet with Trudeau showed up. .
