Canada, United States and Mexico agree to fight racism and discrimination

The governments of Canada, the United States and Mexico have agreed to jointly fight racism and discrimination.

On the eve of the 10th Summit of North American Leaders, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard; US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly signed the Declaration of the North American Alliance for Racial Inclusion and Equality.

In his speech, Ebrard affirmed that racism in Mexico is a relevant issue and that now in schools it is approached with a different vision.

“In the case of Mexico, racism is something extremely relevant, racism has not been mentioned for a long time, there are many studies, now it is a very important question, we have also revisited our story about slavery that they never tell you at school,” he commented. .

“Racism in Mexico synthesizes a lot of social, gender and other inequalities, but these two mainly,” he added.

Earlier, in a speech delivered at the reception of the President and First Lady of the United States, Joe Biden and Jill Biden, the latter with writer Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, made a statement common ground in which they condemned any expression of xenophobia, classism and racism.

In the brief message read in English and Spanish as part of the official welcoming ceremony at the National Palace, the wives of the dignitaries called for the eradication of all forms of inequality from the Americas in the future.

The North American Leaders’ Summit began this evening with a dinner at the National Palace and will continue tomorrow with the meeting of the three leaders of the region.
