Eligibility criteria for requesting support from Canadian medical services when choosing medical assistance in dying, according to the law website –consulted on December 1, 2022–, there are five:
- Be eligible for health services funded by the federal government, a province or territory (or during the applicable minimum residency period or qualifying waiting period).
- Be at least 18 years old and mentally capable. It means being able to make health care decisions for yourself.
- Have a serious and irremediable illness.
- Voluntarily request medical assistance in dying (MAID) without being the result of outside pressure or influence.
- Give your informed consent to receive MAID.
As evidenced by the Canadian government page, the economic condition of the applicant is not a requirement only conditions to be eligible, contrary to what social media posts claim. Also clarified in another section from the same portal as in general, visitors to Canada are not eligible for this assistance.
