Mexican miner Fresnillo has started commissioning Juanicipio, a US$440 million gold-silver project in the state of Zacatecas, after completing final testing of control and distribution systems downstream.
Last month, the electricity company CFE approved the start of operations of the main substation that will help supply Juanicipio.
“This concludes additional testing requested by the CFE utility to verify compatibility between new and updated substation equipment installed by Fresnillo for Fresnillo and MAG Silver […] and former CFE infrastructure,” the company said in a statement.
“In this way, the entire system was powered up and the commissioning of the project officially began.”
A 56:44 joint venture with Canada’s MAG Silver, Juanicipio could become one of Mexico’s largest silver mines with annual production of 11.7 million ounces per year, plus 43,500 ounces of gold.
Owned by Industrias Peñoles with a 75% stake, Fresnillo added that the goal is to reach nameplate capacity in the second quarter of 2023. “Once commissioning is complete, the ore will be processed at the Juanicipio mill. and could continue to be processed in nearby Saucito. and Fresnillo operations, if necessary,” the statement read.
