Havana, February 27 (JIT).- Cuban divers had an excellent performance at the Pan American Championship held in Mexico, winning a gold medal with Carlos Daniel Ramos and three bronze medals.

Ramos had a dream competition from the platform, adding the best mark of his life with 515.30 units.

“With this accumulated you win a high level competition, even a world fight. He did everything well, most of his jumps received marks of 9.5 and 10 points. It was spectacular,” National Diving Commissioner Milagros González told JIT from headquarters.

Carlos Daniel was particularly precise in executing the three and a half laps behind (3.3 degrees of difficulty), earning him five 10-point scores from the seven judges in the competition.

Winner of the platform at the I Cali 2021 Junior Pan American Games and finalist of the Budapest 2022 world competition as a partner of Luis Gustavo Cañabate in the synchronized platform, the man from the capital is on his way to becoming the main male figure in this sport on the island.

Behind were Mexican José Diego Balleza (484.85) and Canadian Nathan Zsombor-Murray (473.50). In seventh seat, also anchored Cuban Jesús Rodríguez (364.40), recently released from the youth ranks, whose performance was also praised by the Cuban board. From his point of view, the most relevant thing was that he “withstood the pressure in the face of much more experienced divers”.

Shortly before, there was a dispute over the women’s three-meter springboard, but without Cuban leadership, since Anisley García and Prisis Leidy Ruiz were left out of the medal distribution.

Anisley was sixth at 271.90 and her partner trailed her in the standings at 241.90. Canadians Pamela Ware (333.75) and Margo Erlam (304.40) monopolized the gold and bronze medals, in that order, with Mexico’s Arantxa Chávez (327.60) taking the middle step of the podium.

Cuba had previously won bronze medals for Anisley on the platform, Laydel Domínguez on the three-metre springboard and Prisis Leidy on the one-metre.

“We are very happy with what we consider a victory for all”, confirmed Milagros before recalling that this event defined the qualification for the Pan American Games of 2023 in Santiago.

Although it will be necessary to wait for the officialization of the places, Cuba has secure quotas in all the modalities. In addition, these results provided points for the ranking that will govern the distribution of tickets for the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador 2023.

At the Aztec event, only individual events were convened, and exhibitors from 10 countries participated. The hosts dominated the event with two gold medals and five silver. They were followed by representatives from Canada (2-1-3) and Cuba (1-0-3).
