Podiums for Bogotá in squash, cycling and wheelchair tennis | IDRD

  • All three of these sports shone over the weekend away from home. At the local level, ultimate won the Interleague silver medal.

Bogotá DC, February 21, 2023 (IDRD).- With multiple podiums in four sports, namely squash -double game-, cycling and wheelchair tennis, these three outside the country, and ultimate locally, Bogotá had a very good weekend sports results.

Squash was the most notable sport, with a big contribution to the Colombian title at the XXIII South American Youth Championship held in Trujillo, Peru; The Bogotá team won 12 medals, including 4 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze.

The gold medals were won by Lucía Scarpetta (under 13) and Luciana Martínez (under 15) individually, Juan José Torres and Juan Irisarri (men’s doubles) and in men’s teams; the silver medals were obtained by Juan Irisarri (under 17) in individual and María Juliana Gómez (women’s doubles); and the bronzes went to Juan José Torres (under 19), Alejandro Martínez (under 17), María Juliana Gómez (under 17), Tomás Scarpetta (under 15), María Camila Sabogal (under 15 years old) and the women’s team.

On the other hand, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez reached the semi-finals of the Oxford Properties Canadian Open Squash, which was played in Calgary, Canada, where he lost against the 1st seed of the tournament, the French Víctor Crouin 3-1 with partial 11-3, 8-11, 11-9 and 13-11. After winning his second semi-final of the year, Miguel is now preparing for other tournaments on the PSA professional circuit in Bogotá, whose objective is the British Open.

Other podiums

As for cycling, the Bogotá cyclist Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) placed third in the general classification of the Vuelta a Andalucía, in Spain, won by the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates), with a total time of 21.04: 57 hours . Second was Spaniard Mikel Landa -the Colombian’s teammate- at 1:23 minutes, and Buitrago was third at 1:28.

In wheelchair tennis, a great presentation of the Bogotá team with Colombia at the Future ITF Puebla 2023 in Mexico, winning two gold medals and one silver. The gold medals were won by Johana Martínez individually, beating Zuleiny Rodríguez of Valle del Cauca 6-0 and 6-0, and Johana and Zuleiny in doubles, beating Canadians Anne-Marie Dolinar and Natalia Lanucha 6-2 and 6 -0; the silver was obtained by Manuel Sánchez Quitián, in partnership with Eliécer Oquendo (Atlántico), who lost in the final against the Brazilians Gustavo Carneiro and Daniel Rodríguez 6-2 and 6-4.

At the national level, the podium went to the ultimate team from Bogotá, who finished second in the National Interleague Flying Disc Championship, held in Santa Marta, after losing 8-4 to Antioquia in the final; the bronze went to Santander.

Finally, in athletics, the marathon in Seville, Spain, was run, where Angie Orjuela placed 21st with a time of 2:33:05; the winner was Kenyan Jackline Chelal with 2.20:29. And in men, Iván González was box 100 with a record of 2.21:55 hours; the winner was Ethiopian Gadisha Birhanu with 2.04:59.
