Havana, Feb. 1 (JIT).- Cuban Luis Enrique Zayas made his debut by sharing second place in the high jump at the 2023 Nehvizdy Stars International Indoor Athletics Meeting, in the Czech Republic.

A jump over 2.22 meters was enough to be among the winners of the event dominated by Belgian Thomas Carmoy, who closed with 2.25 meters after failing three times before the height of 2.28 meters.

Zayas, Lima 2019 Pan American champion and owner of an indoor personal best of 2.33 meters, started the competition at 2.14 meters and then passed 2.18 and the aforementioned 2.22 meters without fail.

His presentation ended when he knocked down the rod placed 2.35 meters off the ground three times, according to the footage posted on the competition website.

The Polish Norbert Kobielski and the Mexican Erick Portillo were others who won the 2.22 meters, also without failure in any of the previous jumps, and for this reason they occupied the same seat as the Cuban.

In the traditional Czech rally, which has been held since 2018, 13 high jumpers showed up this time, although current South Korean indoor world champion Sanghyeok Woo was among those announced.

The best of the current winter season’s world ranking is a record of 2.38 meters achieved on the 29th by Russian Danil Lysenko, the only one to have more than 2.30 meters so far this year.

In other results on the day, Canadian Sarah Mitton set a rally record of 19.29 meters in ball throw, and host Tomáš Stanek did the same in the men’s with 21.45 meters.

The next moment of the current tour for the Cubans will be played by Zayas himself, invited to the Hustopece rally, also in the Czech Republic, next Saturday.
