Leon, Guanajuato.- If this León 2023 as the American capital of sport hosts international competitions in motorsport, diving, volleyball, among other disciplines, basketball is not far behind since the city is projected as a candidate location for receive the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.

Over the past week, an Evaluation Commission made up of Edgar Marín, Head of Competitions and Ignacio Franzosi, FIBA Americas Events Coordinator, arrived in León.
Isaac Piña, director of the Physical Culture and Sports Commission of León, acknowledged during a speech that the visit of the representatives of FIBA Americas must apply to León as the venue for the women’s championship FIBA Americas.
“We are looking for a continental championship for this 2023, the women’s AmeriCup, it would be historical, that we can have in our country and of course here in León, the American capital of sport, this event will allow us to continue projecting the capacity of our city to receive international class competitions”, commented Isacc Piña in a conference for El Sol de León.
According to the bidding process established by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), after the inspection visit, the evaluation committee submits a report to the FIBA Central Office, while the candidates must present the dossier application final.
“This tournament would be for the month of July, we hope to have news mid-February. The visit of the FIBA Americas authorities was very interesting, we went over all aspects of accommodation, restaurants andThe technical problem and the terrain of the Dome (of the Fair) and they had a very good impression”added the head of COMUDE León.
For the leader of the paramunicipal organization, the Dome of the Fair is ready to receive the best quintets of the American continent.
“It would be the Dome of the Fair, it is a Championship of 10 teams, the best of the American continent, highlighting of course the Mexican team. The United States team, which are multiple Olympic champions, will also come from Canada, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Argentina. It will undoubtedly be a great event,” concluded Piña Valdivia.
If the León venue is finalized, it would be the third time Mexico has hosted the highest women’s competition at senior team level, previous editions being in 2003 in Culiacán, Sinaloa and 2013 in Xalapa, Veracruz.
The last edition of the Women’s AmeriCup was held in 2021 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, In this contest, the representative of the Stars and Stripes was crowned, who played in the final against the home team.

It should be noted that León is a place of tradition in Mexican basketball, it is currently present in the National Professional Basketball League with the Bees, a team that was just crowned in the last 2022 campaign, this same franchise has participated in the first edition of the women’s LNBP.
