14 Canadian hockey players die in road accident

Notimex.- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have confirmed that 14 hockey players were killed and 14 others injured after the bus they were traveling on collided with a semi-trailer. The events occurred Friday evening on Highway 35, near Gronild, in the province of Saskatchewan, in central Canada. The Humboldt Broncos hockey team was made up of young people aged 16 to 21. Among the survivors, three are in critical condition, according to official reports. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent his condolences to the families of the injured young people. “I can’t imagine how the parents feel. My heart goes out to all those affected by this tragedy,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

For his part, the Minister of National Security, Ralph Goodale, declared that the news was “devastating”, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and stressed that emergency teams were at the scene of the accident to provide all possible assistance. Three ambulance helicopters arrived on scene. The Humboldt Broncos hockey team released a statement saying “the Broncos family is shocked by this horrific tragedy and will attempt to come to terms with our incredible losses.” As soon as they learned of last night's accident, around 100 people, including the players' parents, uncles and friends, gathered at the Nipawin Apostolic Church to seek information about their loved ones. The hockey team is part of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Among the Humboldt Broncos players, 13 come from Saskatchewan, 10 from Alberta and one from Manitoba. The Saskatchewan community organized and immediately launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money and help the victims' families. As of this Saturday morning, $42,000 had been raised.
