Wealth Minerals and Thyssenkrupp to develop lithium project in Chile

The Canadian junior Wealth Minerals has signed an agreement with the German company Thyssenkrupp Mining Technologies for the development of the lithium project in the Salar de Ollagüe, located in the Chilean region of Antofagasta.

The companies have agreed to develop the project from exploration to commercial scale production, Wealth Minerals said in a statement.

In the first stage, Wealth Minerals and Thyssenkrupp will perform brine testing and establish a pilot plant, as well as evaluate and select sustainable processing technology for lithium mining and purification processing.

“Traditional evaporative production methods are not an option for us on this project. Our goal is to meet the highest sustainability standards while minimizing environmental impact,” said Marcelo Awad, Wealth Minerals Director for Chile.

Previous drilling campaigns conducted by Lithium Chile in 2018 returned grades of up to 480mg/l of lithium.

Further exploration will be required to delineate the project’s mineral resources, the statement said.

The mining and marketing of lithium in Chile is subject to strict government control and requires the issuance of specific permits by various authorities.

The Chilean government is currently working on the corresponding regulations, alongside the creation of a national lithium company.
