Quito scores and Montreal wins the duel between Canadian clubs

Djordie Mihailovic scored early in the game, Honduran Romell Quioto added another early in the second half and Montreal beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 on Saturday.

Mihailovic took advantage of a forward pass into the box that put him in a prime position to beat Canadian goalkeeper Thomas Hasal in the first minute. Montreal extended its number of consecutive games without losing to four.

A block and good collective play allowed Quioto near the penalty spot to make it 2-0 against Montreal, who have won three games in a row and are fifth in the Eastern Conference with 10 points.

Brian White edged out Vancouver, second-last in the West with four points.

Atlanta goalie Brad Guzan was carried off the field on a stretcher after injuring his Achilles tendon and collapsing in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Cincinnati in MLS.

The 37-year-old goaltender disappeared without contact just outside the Atlanta penalty box and started hitting the artificial turf.

With a towel over his head, he received a standing ovation from the crowd as he was helped out in the 73rd minute.

“It doesn’t look good,” Atlanta coach Gonzalo Pineda admitted. “That’s why I’m sad. It’s not a question of result or performance, it’s Brad’s injury. I have to wait for the resonances and the tests that are going to be done. It was not an injury knee, it was an Achilles tendon injury.”

Guzan was replaced by Bobby Shuttleworth.

Cincinnati goalie Alec Kann, who played for Atlanta between 2017 and 2021, saved Argentina’s Marcelino Moreno’s penalty in the 63rd minute after a handball from Dom Badji.

In another game, the San Jose Earthquakes tied Nashville 2-2.
