Grosso scores 2 goals as Canada beat Trinidad & Tobago 6-0

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Julie Grosso scored twice as Canada defeated Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 in a group stage match at the CONCACF W Championship on Tuesday.

The W Championship serves as a qualifier for next summer’s World Championships in Australia and New Zealand.

Christine Sinclair scored her 190th career goal, a standing international record between women and men.

After Sinclair’s header in the 27th minute, Grosso scored in the 67th and 79th minutes, his first two goals for the Canadian team. Jessie Fleming, who missed a penalty in the first half, scored on the 84th. Two minutes later Janine Beckie scored.

Jordyn Huitema added Canada’s last goal at halftime.

Canada, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, and Trinidad and Tobago are in Group B of the W Championship. Earlier in the evening, Rocky Rodriguez scored early as Costa Rica beat the Panama 3-0.

Rodriguez, who plays with Sinclair and Beckie for the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League, scored in the sixth minute. María Paula Salas scored a goal on the 24th.

Katherine Alvarado scored for Costa Rica from the penalty spot in the 60th minute.

Costa Rica has only participated in the World Cup once, in 2015. Panama have never qualified for the most prestigious event in international football.

Eight teams were split into two groups for the tournament. The top two from each group earn a place for the 2023 World Cup. The third-place finishers qualify for the 10-team intercontinental qualifiers in February in New Zealand.

The winner of the tournament also earns one of the region’s berths at the 2024 Olympics.

The United States, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti are in Group A. The United States beat Haiti 3-0 to open the tournament on Monday, while Jamaica beat Mexico 1-0.
