Canada has decided to “temporarily relocate” part of its military personnel stationed in Ukraine to another part of Europe, given the situation in the region, announced this Sunday (13.02.2022) the Canadian Ministry of Defense.
In a statement, he said that this transfer “does not mean the end of the mission” of the Canadian military, but allows Ottawa to “redirect” its efforts while guaranteeing the safety of its troops. Ottawa did not specify the number of relocated soldiers or their new destination.
Some 200 Canadian soldiers have been deployed to Ukraine since 2015 as part of a United Nations (UN) mission to help train Ukrainian forces.
“The Canadian military remains committed to the people of Ukraine and to its mission to develop the capabilities of Ukrainian security forces,” Ottawa said.
The United States announced late last week the withdrawal from Ukraine of 160 troops who were training Ukrainian forces.
At the same time, Canada announced on February 12 the temporary closure of its embassy in Kyiv and the transfer of its operations to a temporary office in Lviv (west), due to the “deterioration of the situation caused by the deployment of Russian troops in the border”. .
