(CNN) — A Canadian has died while hiking in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, the National Park Service (NPS) has reported.
Melanie Goodine, 41, was exiting the canyon along the Bright Angel Trail near the Three-Mile Rest Home on Thursday when authorities received a report that she was in distress, the NPS said in a statement. Press release.
“Soon after, the hiker became unresponsive and bystanders began CPR,” the statement said. “National Park Service (NPS) search and rescue personnel responded and assisted with resuscitation efforts. All attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.”
Goodine was leaving the canyon after hiking to the Colorado River earlier in the day.
Shade temperatures in the area where Goodine was walking peaked around 35 to 40 degrees Celsius on Thursday, Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman Joelle Baird told CNN. Depending on the trail taken, Goodine’s journey can be up to 20 miles round trip.
“The NPS does not recommend walking from the edge to the river and back in one day,” their statement reads.
The NPS is currently investigating the incident in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
