Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak confirmed on Monday from Canada that the Polish authorities had sent a dozen MiG-29 model fighter planes to Ukraine, one of the main demands of the Ukrainian Armed Forces within the framework of the war against Russia.
Blaszczak thus appreciated Warsaw’s determination to support Kiev’s interests and urged other countries to join its leadership, although he stressed that Poland was not seeking to “pressure” its allies. “We are trying to support Ukraine, which is also fighting for our freedom,” he said.
Thus, the Polish Minister of Defense recalled the words of former President Lech Kaczynski (2005-2010), who already warned in 2008 in the context of the Russian invasion of Georgia that after this country, Moscow would try to invading Ukraine, then the Baltic countries and “later, it may be Poland’s turn”.
Thus, during a press conference with his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, Blaszczak thanked Ottawa’s decision to deliver Leopard tanks to Ukraine, an initiative also led by Poland and which required international support to circumvent Germany’s possible veto, continues the PAP agency.
Poland promised months ago to deliver up to twenty models of MiG-29 fighter jets to the Ukrainian armed forces and has already agreed to buy another 48 South Korean FA-50 fighters as replacements. At the beginning of March, Warsaw confirmed that it had delivered “several” MiG-29s to kyiv.
After obtaining the commitment of the Western powers to send combat tanks, the Ukrainian authorities set themselves the main objective of supplying combat aircraft, even if most of its allies – with the exception of Poland and of Slovakia- have so far shown themselves reluctant to send such combat aircraft.
