One of the objectives of Luis Gilberto Murilloambassador of Colombia in the United States, is to advance the proposal to eliminate the visa for Colombian citizens. EL TIEMPO spoke with Murillo and found out who would be the first excluded from the document.

While progress is being made on the proposal to completely eliminate the visa for Colombians, Luis Gilberto Murillo mentioned to this newspaper that progress is being made on two proposals so that some citizens benefit from them and do not need the document to enter the United States.

The first would be for Colombians who constantly make trips to the North American countrybecause there are people “who have been coming to the United States for years, who have never had a problem, have not stayed and do not want to. This group of people should already have an exemption because they has been shown that they do not have other intentions to come to this country and carry out their tourist and commercial activities,” Murillo pointed out.

The second option would concern a Colombia pre-entryAlthough this proposal has not been discussed with the North American country, Murillo explains that people could carry out “their document review immigration process, which is called pre-entry, once in Colombia. This is already happening with countries like Canada.”

Regarding the removal of the visa for the United States, the ambassador mentioned that the request is being developed jointly with the Department of Homeland Security and that this process “takes years, I insist, but it cannot be set aside”.

“We are discussing it. The truth is we have differences and we are working on it. The US government is very open to us discussing it,” he said.
